Know About Goa

Know About Goa

Less than half a day away from the dark days and the cold, gloomy nights of the British winter, lies the beautiful tropical paradise of Goa. Originally a Portuguese settlement until it's independence in 1961, Goa still retains a strong European influence, most evident in the splendid architecture.

Goa borders the clear waters of the Arabian sea with an enviable coastline stretching over 130 kilometres from North to South. Goa is divided into two areas each with their own distinct appeal.

North Goa stretches from Candolim to Anjuna and is known for its lively nightlife, with an endless choice of shops, bars and restaurants.

Calangute and Baga are the main resorts areas and are both within an hour of Panjim, the capital and main gateway to the region. North Goa is also home to the historic town of Old Goa, with its many historic buildings and churches.

South Goa is a complete contrast to the North and the perfect place for those seeking a quiet holiday. Hotels are more widely spread out along the endless stretches of beach, with the resort of Colva providing the best selection of shops, bars and nightlife.

The area is also famous for its seafood cuisine, reputedly the best in Goa.

The migration of non-Goans to Goa & Goans to foreign countries is a phenomenon which has lubricated the wheels of economic development in Goa. One of the impressive features of Goa is that Goa never had the oppressive levels of poverty that prevailed in the rest of the country.

More than 50 % of the Goan population lives in urban areas and with a high per capita income. The percentage of the Goan middle class is considerably larger than that of any other state in India.

FORT AGUADA

FORT AGUADA

Fort Aguada, Goa
Fort Aguada entrance with the watchtower in the background standing on the headland, overlooking the mouth of the Mandovi River, Fort Aguada occupies a magnificent position, especially due to the fact that it was never really taken over by any external force at any point in time in its history.

The impetus for building the fort came from the increasing the threat of attacks by the Dutch and construction work was commenced in the year 1612.

The fort actually covers the entire headland and the river, which runs to the northeast at the base of the hill, was once connected with the seashore at Candolim to form a moat, so that the headland was entirely cut off. One of the great advantages of the site were the abundance of water from natural springs on the hillside, which led the fort to become an important watering point for ships and for it to be named Aguada.

Today the main point of interest is the bastion that stands on the hilltop, although this is only a fraction of the fort. The buildings below the bastion on the waterfront now house the state prison, but the old bastion on the hilltop can be visited.

Fort Aguada Beach Resort is on the northern side of the hill. Among the impressive sights in the fort are the extremely thick laterite walls. There are huge ground level water storage tanks placed under the main courtyard of the fort.

These huge tanks illustrate the fact that water storage during sieges was very crucial. The old lighthouse that stands in the middle of the fort was built in 1864, from which we can have an excellent view south across the river towards Cabo Raj Niwas and beyond.

A short way to the east of the bastion is the pretty Church of St Lawrence, which also occupies a magnificent viewpoint.

Work started on the church in 1630 and was completed in 1643. Looking down from the church towards the cliff edge, the Aguada Jail can be seen where many inmates serve drug abuse sentences.

Fort Aguada can be reached by a deviation from the Panaji-Calangute road by bus or your own transportation.

Majorda Beach, Goa

Majorda Beach, Goa

Majorda Beach, Goa

The starting point of the main stretch of Southern Beaches of Goa, location of the most exclusive beach resort hotels in Goa and India tourism.

Located in Salcete, Majorda is one of the smaller developed beaches of Goa, albeit the whole area possesses a lot of character, with small fishing villages scattered around palm groves.

This South Goa beach area is the site of three spacious deluxe Goa hotel resorts, quite popular with those on a Goa holiday package tour. To its north are two other small beaches; Arossim, which is its deserted northern end, and Utorda, ten minutes walk further north.

The resorts, along with the lack of any typically cheap Goa accommodation make the area relatively exclusive. For more action, you could hop onto one of the most loved beaches of Goa, Colva, 5 km south.

The villages in the area are relatively prosperous, partly because many families have men working in the Gulf, and many traditional mansions of wealthy families stand out.

The Kenilworth Beach Resort offers a water sports centre managed by professionals which are open to non-residents too.

Apart from the excellent restaurants at the resorts, there're a few clusters of beach shacks close to the resorts offering a good choice from the cuisine of Goa, India and Europe. Betalbatim has a few good restaurants and beach bars.

Interestingly designed as a pirate ship, Treasures is a popular casino cum disco at Majorda Beach Resort Goa. It's also the only disco in Goa or India from where you can send an Email.

MAJORDA BEACH, GOA. ACCOMMODATION

Kenilworth Beach Resort, Goa at Utorda is one of the better luxury Goa resorts.  Heritage Village Club (earlier Sita), at Arossim and Majorda Beach Resort on the main beach, are excellent deluxe Goa hotel resorts.
